Amid all the outstanding individual performances on southern ice last weekend, one stands out. While getting beat for four goals in back-to-back games -- even in victory -- is hardly anything to brag about, when you're a defenseman pressed into service in the crease, it's gonna be memorable and noteworthy.
It's also going to earn you Player of the Week honors in the South Eastern Collegiate Hockey Conference. Actually, Rusty Ware has been Louisiana State's fill-in goalie since the beginning of the season due to the suspension for academic reasons of the Tigers' normal starter.
Not only did Ware backstop LSU to twin 5-4 wins at Mississippi last weekend, he had to stand tall in overtime in both games and through a shootout in one. Furthermore, LSU was shorthanded heading into overtime on Friday night and weathered being two men short in OT the next night.

The LSU Tigers dropped consecutive games for the first time since last season in losing both SEC games with Alabama this weekend. The Tigers were looking for a measure of revenge from the team's defeat last season in Birmingham after playing two games with a short bench. It was a big weekend for the Tigers on the ice and on the gridiron but both teams faltered at the hands of the Crimson Tide.
FRIDAY RECAP: The Tigers started out flat against the Tide and quickly fell behind 3-0. However, LSU came alive in the second half of the first period netting two goals making the score 3-2 after the first period. However, any momentum the Tigers carried into the second period from the first was quickly dampened as the Tigers played a lackluster period giving up a whopping seven goals. The total was the most a Tiger team has given up in a period this season. Looking to rebound, the Tigers found a spark in a hard fought third period in which neither team scored. Alabama won the first contest 10-2.
SATURDAY RECAP: After a quick turnaround of less than seven hours, the two teams matched up again in a precursor to the game at Tiger Stadium between the football powerhouses. The Tigers were able to weather the Crimson Tide storm early and were down only 1-0 after an intense first period. After a quick second period goal by Alabama, the Tigers responded by punching in two goals to tie the game at 2-2. Similar to Friday's game, the momentum was again short lived and the Tigers found trouble surrendering three more goals in each of the second and third periods while being held scoreless and the Tide won the second contest 8-2.
The Tigers will finish out the Fall semester with away games against TCU and SMU and then return home for games against Tulane and Loyola.
The Tigers continued their winning ways this weekend with two victories over the upstart Mississippi State Bulldogs. Now 4-0 on the season, the Tigers also set a club record for the most goals scored in a single game. The Tigers simultaneously improved their conference record to 4-0 giving them solid positioning in the SEC West.
FRIDAY RECAP: The Tigers started out a bit slow on Friday night, spotting State a 1-goal lead early in the first period. However, the Tigers roared back to score 6 unanswered goals en route to a 6-1 victory. While the Tigers continued to struggle with undisciplined penalties, their penalty kill and team defense held firm and kept the Bulldogs off the board. The Tigers took full advantage of their team speed and toughness to defeat the Bulldogs in what was a spirited and physical affair. The Tigers extended their home win streak to 3 games this season.
SATURDAY RECAP: On Saturday, LSU came out strong and picked up where they left off by scoring a club record 11 goals in the contest. The Tigers dominated in all facets of the game carrying a 9-0 lead into the third period. The Tigers moved much better in the second game which resulted in fewer penalties. LSU's speed and controlled puck movement kept State off-balance and out of rhythm for much of the game. The Bulldogs showed some signs of life when they jumped out and scored two quick goals early in the third. The quick rally was short lived as the Tigers answered on their next two shifts scoring back-to-back goals and finished with an 11-2 win.
The Tigers hosted Vanderbilt this weekend for the season opener as well as the kickoff of SEC Conference play. The Tigers took both games to start the season 2-0 overall and a matching 2-0 in SEC play.
FRIDAY RECAP: The Tigers started out a bit sluggish against an undermanned Vanderbilt squad. Fighting through a lackluster first period and a second period full of undisciplined penalties, the Tigers finally found their stride in the third period put together solid period. The game culminated in an exciting finish as the Tigers broke the 6-6 deadlock on a goal with under 10 seconds remaining in regulation.
SATURDAY RECAP: Things started out different for the Tigers on Saturday. From the first puck drop, the Tigers showed a lot of energy and maintained good puck control throughout the first period. However, the second period has not been kind to LSU so early this season. The Tigers again found themselves playing shorthanded and struggled through the second period. In the third period, Vanderbilt made the game interesting with a late goal putting them down only one. However, the Tigers battled through some late penalties to get an insurance goal as they held on for a 7-5 win.
The Tigers will host the Mississippi State Bulldogs next weekend with games on Friday (10:15 PM) and Saturday (3:30 PM).
